MOMMY MY SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECT IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!

The Princess wanted me to post this song. She loves it, but told me you can play an instrument, be a cheerleader, and be the homecoming queen all at the same time. LOL!

UPDATE: K and I had a long talk about the following story. She in no way was making light of the subject. She really did want to explore and research 9/11. She told me she thought about the tower and planes because there were actually people in her class that didn't know what happened on 9/11. I told her no way....she said they really didn't. Finally, we talked about what a horrible day in history it was and reenacting it with models would be really sad. She understood and started crying. She just wanted me to know she wasn't making light of all the people who died. My poor girl.
So, the girly has a project to do for the 5th grade social studies fair. What has she come up with? She and her best friend (a clone and also an honor student) have decided to do something on 9/11.

Wow...9/11. I'm shocked. Very impressive. So, here's the conversation we had. I'll just set up a bullet of some her ideas and observations.

  • Mommy I know one of the "TOURIST'S" name. (Ummmm did she mean terrorist. I checked with her and she did. Terrorist not tourist.)
  • Hey mommy we have it all figured out. We're going to do a board display and then build the twin towers. (Holy Crap...she's not thinking what I think she's thinking?)
  • Then we're going to build the towers with things from Home Depot. You can do that since you know how to use the tools. (She sooooo knows me.)
  • Oh and we need to buy some airplanes. (NO SHE DID NOT SAY THAT)
  • Then we can have the planes crash into the Towers and they will fall.

There will be NO CRASHING OF PLANES!!!!! How do you relay the concept of "in bad taste" and "just not ok?" Basically, you just say...Aaaaah NO. There will be no crashing of planes and buildings falling down. Why? Because I'm the Mommy and I say so. If you argue you'll lose the phone for a week.

All of that and on the first cup of coffee!!!!! Welcome to my world world friends. :)

XOXO

Christie

Wow... that was quite a conversation. I have to applaud the girl for having the strong feelings she does on the subject at such a young age, but perhaps it takes an adult perspective to see that a reinactment might not be the best way to go. Quite a kid there. :)

So... new project yet or is she just changing the presentation?

Wish I could catch a minute alone to talk to you... :(

What a girl she is and she challenges me every single day, but I love it.

I am now going over all of the requirements for the project and choosing something more grade appropriate. Such a handful!

I wish we could find a minute, too!

wow, well i don't think that should be reenacted either. Like that movie of the plane that crashed in the field should have never been made in my opinion. I mean you know what happens but seeing it just brings back the horrible day. I also cant believe that there are kids that don't know. Course if they were too young but looks like it would have been mentioned here and there you know.

I'll never forget the one year anniversary after the OK City bombing I was subbing for a 1st grade class and we held a moment of silence and the kids were like, "What's going on?"

I cried at the complete innocence that they would lose over their lifetime.

MD .... You hit it on the head. Our children are so innocent. I'm so lucky that my 11 year old is still innocent.

She doesn't quite remember it happening. She just started 1st grade.

My sweet baby.

I can see where it might not be appropriate for some ages and some settings, but I tend to think we try too hard to not remember things we should really never forget.

It might do us all some good, every now and then, to sit alone in our living rooms and watch it all over again. Just because something scares us or hurts us or reminds us of our fragility, doesn't mean it's bad for us.

But what do I know?

Raggamuffin..I completely agree with you. My worries were the 5th grade boys and their reactions. I think you're right, though. Forgetting is not the answer.

OMG! Can you imagine if she really did do that?
Her thoughts were very innocent in nature though, and she doesn't have the adult emotions we have when we remember...
I think you handled it well.

I THINK IT'S REALLY WONDERFUL THAT SHE'S SO OPEN TO LEARNING ABOUT SOMETHING AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE AND REALLY TAKING IT SERIOUSLY. GREAT JOB CHRISTIE FOR INSTILLING THAT TRAIT IN HER =]
